Sandaron Sleag, the greatest warrior in the world, must rescue his wife and son from Lorehawk the Dragonslayer, an evil wizard-king who holds them captive in Twin Rivers Castle.
Because of Lorehawk's powerful magic, a normal assault on the castle would be sure to fail, so Sleag assembles a band of colorful characters, a stable boy, an innkeeper, a bog witch and her wild teenage daughter, and a master swordsman known as "The Ghost," to join him on his rescue quest.
Things get complicated very quickly when they discover that Sleag's wife is rumored to be in love with Lorehawk, and will soon marry the Wizard-King. And a rebellion is brewing with several players fighting for control of the castle that could end in everyone's death. Their only hope lies in the hands of Blather the Green, an enormously fat Mage who might be as powerful as Lorehawk . . . or simply a fool.
Their amazing journey to the castle, and their death-defying adventures are detailed in this first exciting installment of Sleag's Quest from Master Storyteller G. K. Hayes

Gary Kim Hayes has published evocative short stories here and there, and now we have a fantasy novel--or the first installment of a long saga--from him. It's very promising and engagingly written. We start with Grenel O'Doone, innkeeper of the Ivy Rose, an old soldier who always wanted to settle down after his service in the wars that founded the Three Kingdoms ended. Now that he has . . . life is a little boring. At least until the tall, brawny stranger wrapped in animal skins shows up one evening and asks for Lyndy, a local girl trying to raise a baby on her own. When the stranger turns out to be Sandaron Sleag--the legendary Sleag the Slayer--one of O'Doone's problems is over. His life isn't going to be boring from here on out.
As it develops, there's a wizard king, Lorehawk, who is extremely interested in Lyndy and her son. And Lyndy isn't exactly the ordinary village girl O'Doone assumed she was. And when a menacing stranger shows up . . . O'Doone is long in the tooth, and he's many years and many pounds from the battlefield, but his blood begins to stir.
There's a sense of reality here that grounds the fantasy elements, and the characters really seem to have lives of their own. Touches of humor, touches of adventure, touches of romance, the book has everything a fantasy needs. I think you'll be reminded of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, in a good way. My only complaint? This short novel only whets the appetite. Let's have more of Sleag and company, soon, please, Mr. Hayes!

Return of the Warrior Sleag Quest Book 1 eBook GK Hayes Reviews
Good story. It's short, but the characters are fun. Innkeep as narrator is an old device and Hayes uses it well.
This is part one of an ongoing series of short stories featuring Sleag the Slayer. The story is an interesting one and ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, but it depends a bit too much on the reader being familiar with the genre to fill in details about what is going on. Still I'd like to see where the author takes the tale.
The story is great and enjoyable but as you near the end of the book you realize that this is only the beginning of the story. The publisher, or someone has divided up what seems like chapters of a good story and are making you pay piecemill for it. Its a good reard but I'm wondering how much it wiull cost me to get to the end.
...in a tavern. Grenel O'Doone should be careful what he asks for because sometimes it walks right in the front door, and it doesn't care if he's ready or not.
Return of the Warrior (Sleag's Quest, Book 1) is an excellent read and a lovely foundation for the adventure that is to follow, in the Sleag's Quest series. In book one, good writing and a great story come together like two seasoned adventurers sharing a pint of ale by a cozy fire. G.K. Hayes opens his characters to you a little with each turning page, and before you realize what you're doing you'll be saddled up to ride for Negera's Bog (Sleag's Quest, Book 2).
High fantasy and adventure are just outside the door, but there's story unfolding at the Ivy Rose. Pull up a chair and order a pint of O'Doone's finest. You won't want to miss this tale.
Sleag's quest is set in a fantasy realm that is reminiscent of The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss- one of my favorite series. Follow an old innkeeper who, bored with the monotony of his mundane existence, stumbles into a world of adventure when he meets the misunderstood warrior Sleag and learns the true identity of his favorite tavern maiden, the strong yet innocent Lyndy. Complete with characteristically antiquated dialogue, an almost medieval ambiance, lovely maidens and powerful warriors, the first book in Hays' series is sure to captivate!
Return of the Warrior isn't so much a story on its own as the first couple chapters in a longer adventure fantasy story. It reads well enough, though also in the tradition of adventure fantasy everywhere, I (as a female reader) was disappointed to find women only relevant in so much as they gave men reason to do things. All topped off with casual references to the indecipherable, turbulently emotional female mind. On the flip side, I was pleased that Sleag had his own moments of indecision and even tears at one point, though he wasn't likened to the insane for them. All in all, if you're the sort who liked quest fantasy and don't mind the serialized format, it's worth picking up.
This book is definitely pulp fantasy - a genre which I enjoy as a guilty pleasure but one which rarely rises above.
The book is short. It's supposed to be in six installments, five of which are out. They are all $2.99 at the time of this writing, and this one was 75 pages. In other words, there is no price advantage to buying the whole story as opposed to a book from an established, traditionally published author.
This aside, let's address the story
Okay, I'm done describing the story. Not much happens. I suppose that this part is to establish the characters, but there isn't a single one of them that I'd want to spend more time with at this point. I've really been leaning towards three stars for this book. I'm giving it four because it actually is well-edited, and the dialogue may be tired but it isn't poorly written. I've become so sick of poorly-edited books with horrendous dialogue that anything that doesn't make me cringe gets the benefit of the doubt.
But I'm not buying the rest. I never came to care what happens to the rest of the characters.
